Perry Central has been the premier team in the 14th Region in recent years, but the new kid on the block won the title last year.

Newly consolidated Letcher County Central claimed the title but must replace four starters.

1. Perry County Central (29-3) hasn’t been to Bowling Green in two years, but return two of the top players in the region in Kristen Madden and Heather Sturdivant.

Madden is the region’s top player after scoring 26.5 points and grabbing 10.5 rebounds a game. The 6-0 senior shot 64-percent from the floor.
Sturdivant, a 5-6 junior, tossed in 17 points and handed out five assists a game.

Head coach Randy Napier is looking for a couple of other players to contribute on the offensive end. They include returning center Allison Feltner (9.4 ppg., 8.5 rpg.) and Katie Caines.

2. Breathitt County - One team poised to make a strong run at Perry Central is Breathitt County (22-9), who returns four starters from last year’s squad that lost to Letcher Central in the region final.

While the Lady Bobcats must replace Colette Cole, who took her 25.8 points and 11.4 rebounds a game to Eastern Kentucky University, senior Nicole Lutes (12.7 ppg.) and junior center Lenae Shouse (8.9 ppg., 7.9 rpg.) are ready to fill the void.

3. Letcher Central (26-7) won the region title in their first year of existence, but must replace four starters.

Point guard Ashley Sexton averaged 8.6 points and 3.2 rebounds last year. Tierra Baker (5.5 ppg., 3.2 rpg.) is expected to move into the starting lineup.

4. Knott County Central (16-14), the 2005 region champ, lost to Letcher Central in the 53rd District title game and to Perry Central in the first round of the region tournament.

Junior guard Megan Mosley averaged 16.5 points and shot 35-percent from 3-point range for the Lady Patriots, who hit 135 long-range shots as a team.

Kendra Thomas and Lindsey Gibson also return for KCC, who is coached by Chris Amburgey.

5. Leslie County (14-16) returns three starters from last year’s team that gelled slowly under new coach Dwight Lewis.

Senior guard Ciara Stidham (13.8 ppg., 7.9 apg.) returns to run the Lady Eagle offense, while senior Beth Lewis is back in the middle after scoring 14.7 points and grabbing 8.3 rebounds a game last year.

Leslie County is looking to return to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1986.

6. Wolfe County (18-13) is another team that could make a strong postseason run.
