1. OWENSBORO (24-9) - OHS must continue to improve shooting the basketball, which was a definite weakness last year. The Devils were a strong defensive team.

Several football players will again have to catch up if OHS makes a deep run into the Class 5-A playoffs.

Yorel Shemwell should be back at point guard. Reggie West and Brock Moorman can anchor the inside. Moorman, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior, averaged 11 points and seven rebounds a game on a very balanced team. Tyler Acton, a 5-11 wing player, is another potential scorer.

Tyler Swift, who transferred from McLean County, can shoot from the outside.

2. MUHLENBERG NORTH (22-10) - Aaron Morris was one of the top scorers in the western part of the state last year, hitting for 23 points a game.

The 6-2 senior got on quite a roll late in the season, scoring 30 or more several times down the stretch.

Ty Dillingham, a 6-4 senior, was all-regional tournament and is maybe the best athlete in the program. Jake Clark and Tommy Oates (6-4) can both cause problems for opponents with their athleticism. Jordan McElwain returns as a junior point guard.

3. APOLLO (22-10) - The Eagles are now one season removed from a magical run to the Sweet 16 championship game in 2006. Tyler Brown was a sophomore then, and a senior now who will be expected to produce at a big-time level.

Brown, a 6-2 senior, averaged 16 points and five rebounds a game. Terrance Johnson (6-2) is another top-notch player for the Eagles who can score and rebound. Michael Pope played as much as the starters last year and will likely be a starter at point guard this season.

Harris Bivin (6-3, 260), Hunter Rowe, Jordan Ferguson and Micah Hollowell add depth and flexibility.

4. MEADE COUNTY (23-7) - Riley Benock earned a scholarship to Mississippi State, but the Greenwave is very solid as a regional contender with four starters returning from last season.

Meade County was one basket short of going to the regional championship game, and could be right there again with four starters returning for Coach Jerry Garris.

Leading that group is inside player Nick Stinnett, a 6-2, 220-pound senior. He averaged 13 points and seven rebounds a game last year. Chris Roe is a 6-foot forward who is also strong in the paint. Casey Hubbard will be the point guard and Rob Williams will be one perimeter player. Eric Whelan or Jonathan Ives will fill the other position.

5. GRAYSON COUNTY (20-10) - The Cougars are being tabbed by several coaches as a dark horse for the regional title. They do have one of the best players in the region in Travis Johnston. The sophomore is a fine shooter who makes this team go.

Travis Johnston has been Grayson County’s leading scorer since he was in the eighth grade. He averaged 15 points a game and was first team all-region as a freshman.

Guard play will be important for Grayson County because its tallest player is 6-2.

6. DAVIESS COUNTY (15-14) - This should be the Panthers’ best team in Charley Broughton’s four years as head coach. They have developed some players who are multi-dimensional and they have a lot of height.

Alex Stivers is a junior who averaged 13 points and eight rebounds a game. Hayden Simon is a 6-5 sophomore and David Biggs is a 6-6 senior. Adam Satterfield provides good and tall depth at 6-8.

7. HANCOCK COUNTY (13-16) - The Hornets have potential, but they also have a lot of players around the same size, between 6-1 and 6-3. That will make Coach Curtis Shelton’s team big on the perimeter, but the Hornets could struggle against taller, more physical teams in the paint.

Wes Pate is one of the team’s top players at a swing position. Ethan Basham will be in the middle. Mike Mosby will be at point guard and Garrett Helm should also be a top player.

8. MUHLENBERG SOUTH (15-16) - The Suns had a good season that included a win over county rival Muhlenberg North, and expectations are strong that the building job done by Coach Terry Nofsinger can continu. Freshman guard Michael Civils will be a good player.

9. BRECKINRIDGE COUNTY (8-18) - The Tigers might be lacking experienced players, but they have a new leader who is very familiar to those who remember perhaps the greatest moment in school history.

Patrick Critchelow will be in his first year as head coach at Breckinridge County. Critchelow was the starting point guard on the Tigers 1995 state champions. He was also the state tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

10. OHIO COUNTY (14-14) - The Eagles have won 14 games each of the last two seasons for Coach Paul Decker. That may be tough to duplicate with the departure of a senior class that included big men Josh Clemons, Chase Melton, Josh Vaught and Alex Embry.

11. OWENSBORO CATHOLIC (7-19) - A rebuilding job that could stretch over several seasons continues for Perry Bailey in his second year with the Aces. Young players gained a lot of experience last year.

12. McLEAN COUNTY (17-11) - The Cougars rode the fine shooting of guard Bryson Phillips to a fine record, but they lost to North in the first round of the district tournament. Phillips has graduated with his 20-plus points a game, so Coach Andy Groves will have to rely on senior Jordan Phillips.

13. EDMONSON COUNTY (12-16) - The Wildcats of second-year coach Darryl Travis look to have a good group of juniors and seniors that can help continue the rebuilding process for the program. They won as many games in 2006-07 as they did the previous two seasons combined.

14. BUTLER COUNTY (9-18) - After losing an assortment of seniors the Bears will depend on senior point guard Tyler Crowder and junior big man Travis Cannon.

15. WHITESVILLE TRINITY (6-19) - The Raiders are trying to turn their program around after two seasons with a combined total of 11 wins. Coach Robbie Merritt will rely on T.J. Payne for scoring and rebounding

16. CLOVERPORT (7-19) - It will be another year of attempted improvement for Coach Jeff LaGrange’s squad.
