BGP 14th Region Girls' Preview

Perry County Central is looking to get back where it belongs – the top of the 14th Region.

The Lady Commodores haven’t been to the Sweet 16 since 2004, with region rivals Knott County Central, Letcher County Central and Breathitt County since advancing to the Big Dance.

1. Perry County Central (25-6). The Lady Commodores return three starters from last year’s squad that lost to Breathitt County in the finals of the region championship.

Senior guard Heather Sturdivant is back leading Perry County Central’s offense with 18 points and three assists last year

Also back are seniors Allison Feltner (10.6 ppg.) and Cindy Kilburn (7.2 ppg.)

The Lady Commodores have options when it comes to filling in the final two spots on their starting lineup.

Katie Eversole, Millicent Fugate, Chelsie Long, Ashley Neace, and Paige Miller could compete for the final two spots.

2. Breathitt County (25-6). The Lady Cats are looking to win back-to-back region titles for the first time in 30 years.

6-2 senior Lenae Shouse (10.3 ppg., 9 rpg.) and 5-10 junior Brittany Haddix (4.8 ppg.) lead the Lady Bobcat attack.

Eighth grader Kendall Noble, Brittany Hardin, Amanda Southwood, and Emily White also return for the Lady Cats.

3. Knott County Central (11-16). Knott County Central returns all five starters off last year’s team that is three years removed from winning 30 games

5-6 senior Megan Mosley (18.5 ppg.) leads the way, along with junior Krysten Conley and sophomores Sammy King and Kelly Pratt

4. Leslie County (23-6). After 14 wins in 2005, Leslie County improved with 23 wins last year.

Leslie County returns 5-8 junior Kimberly Lewis, 5-8 junior Beth Wooten, and 5-6 senior Whitney Boggs who combined to average 21 points a game last year

5. Letcher County Central (21-9). After winning the region title two years ago and 21 games last year, It’ll be a rebuilding year for the Lady Cougars.


Head coach Dickie Adams has to replace four more starters like he did last year.

5-7 junior Sharaye Kincer is the team’s lone returning starter.

6. Hazard (16-12). Hazard won the All A Classic and will look to build on that with the return of several key players.

Juniors Ashley Hall (12.7 ppg.) and Arielle Engle (7.7 ppg., 7.4 rpg.) are the centerpiece of the junior dominated club for head coach William Fannin.

7. Powell County (17-13). Senior guard Courtney Jones (10.7 ppg.) and sophomore center Kendra McFarland (11.3 ppg.) are the top returnees for the Lady Pirates, who lost to Estill County in the championship game of the 56th District Tournament.
