BGP 12th Region Girls' Preview
Special to Bluegrasspreps.com
Rockcastle County (22-11) – Rockcastle County returns all five starters from last year’s team that was a win away from the 12th Region title game.
Senior guard Sarah Rowe is the best player in the region and presents a tough match up for opponents because of her 5-11 frame. Rowe scored 20.4 points a game, shot 51-percent from the field, and 72-percent from the line.
Junior Mary Saylor and six-foot freshman Sara Hammond also return from last year along with senior guard Sonya Lunsford.
Head coach Chrysti Noble has a roster of nearly a dozen upperclassmen, with most of those in the junior class.
Because of the matchup problems that Rowe and Hammond present, the Lady Rockets are a slight favorite to win the 12th Region.
Wayne County (22-10) – Like Rockcastle County, the Lady Cardinals of Wayne County also return all five starters from last year’s team that advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in three years.
Junior Heather Stearns (14.0 ppg., 5.8 rpg.) and senior Rachel Bristow (11.7 ppg.) both averaged double figures for the Lady Cardinals last year.
Senior Courtney Duncan averaged 7.9 points and proved to be one of the best shooters in the region – hitting 39-percent of her 3-pointers and 82-percent at the charity stripe.
Junior Kayla Jones (5.3 ppg., 3.1 rpg.) and freshman Kayla Bowlin (5.3 ppg.) also return for head coach Tim Pyles, who like Rockcastle County, have just two seniors on the roster.
Southwestern (19-14) – The Lady Warriors lost to Wayne County in both the district and region championship game, taking the Lady Cardinals to overtime before falling by five points in the 12th Region final.
Head coach Tim Rice welcomes back three junior starters – 5-9 Devin Fothergill, Heather Overton, and Stephanie Salyers.
Mercer County (13-18) – Despite a rebuilding season, Mercer County still won the 46th District Tournament in their first year after the merger with Harrodsburg.
Senior Loran Crowell leads a guard-heavy team that should include Hayley Spivey, McKenzie Carey and Hannah Barnett as well as center Meredith Cinnamon.
Boyle County (15-15) – Roger Newton takes over a young team that won the 45th District title last year but did not invite back head coach Judie Mason. She took the job at Danville.
Four starters, including junior guard Hayley Hellyer (18.5 ppg.) and sophomore Kendra Ross, are slated back for the Lady Rebels.
Casey County (20-11) – Randy Salyers has a deep bench returning at Casey County after losing in the 47th District final last year.
Sophomore Nicole Hoffman, freshman Megan Pittman, and senior Tara Weddle are expected to lead their team in an improved district.
