The 5th Region’s top three teams from a year ago – the Elizabethtown Lady Panthers, the Central Hardin Lady Bruins and the North Hardin Lady Trojans – don’t look as if they’re ready to give up those spots just yet.

The three squads combined to go 41-9 against the rest of the region and all three are looking to continue that success this year.

1. Elizabethtown (27-6). The Lady Panthers were two points away from making a second consecutive trip to Bowling Green for the Sweet 16 last season. Elizabethtown lost to North Hardin, 57-55, in the region championship.

And if things go according to plan for veteran coach Tim Mudd, the Lady Panthers should be in the mix for their third straight appearance in the region title game.

The other 15 teams in the region will have to contain the three-headed monster that is junior Alex Jones, senior Jenna Goblirsch and senior Alisa Dickerson.

The Lady Panthers are also expecting big things out of freshman Natalie Greenwell, junior Dorian Downs and freshman Adelaide Luckett.

2. North Hardin (25-8). Despite missing players like Hope Brown, the Lady Trojans return two starters from last year’s team that lost to Louisville Iroquois in the second round of the Sweet 16.

Back to lead the way is RaeChaun Edwards, Linda Dixon, Jennifer Smiley and Mic’a Prince.

James Slaven takes over the program for Tony Perkins, who resigned last year.

3. Central Hardin (23-6). Believe it or not, but Kylie Brady and Samantha Sheeran are finally seniors.

But Brady may not be playing the first couple of games due to a knee injury, but veteran coach Terry Buckles can count on Kaelyn Day, Cortney Gunning, Whitney Allen, Kristin Cardin, Kaitie Fritts and Elena Hitch to fill in until Brady gets healthy.

4. Nelson County (26-4). The Lady Cardinals return Samantha Drake, but must replace three starters and three reserves from the team that lost to North Hardin in the region quarterfinals.

Drake averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds a game in her freshman year.

5. Marion County (20-11). Tacarra Hayes, who averaged 25.8 points and 11.7 rebounds a game last year is back for Lady Knights’ coach Trent Milby.

Hayes was the state’s second-leading scorer and hit more than 50 percent of her shots from the field last year.

Also returning for Marion County are Dee Johnson, Amber Mudd, Andre King, Brooke Roberts, Shelby Howard and Makayla Epps, the daughter of former University of Kentucky basketball star Anthony Epps.

6. Hart County (16-14). Megan Isaacs, the third-best rebounder in the state last year at 13.6 per game, is back for her senior season. Isaacs was also 10th in scoring at 21.9 points per game.

Lindsey Highbaugh, who led the region in 3-pointers made per game (2.1), is also back.

7. Bardstown (17-12). The Lady Tigers return all five starters and are gunning for their third straight appearance in the All A Classic State Tournament.

Bardstown will be led by seniors Shannissa Douglas, Candye Lewis and Elise Blanford.

8. Green County (20-9). The Lady Dragons only have to replace one player off last year’s team.

Eighth-grader Micah Jones, junior Brittany Estes, sophomore Raegan Deaton, junior Megan Hartfield and sophomore Kelsea Mitchell are all back.
