Tenth Region Baseball Preview
(Special to Bluegrasspreps.com)
Harrison County (26-8) fielded a young team in 2007 and advanced to the region title game where they fell to George Rogers Clark.
With most of those players returning for veteran coach Mac Whitaker, the Thorobreds are again the favorite to win the 10th Region.
Yet it will still be a team full of underclassmen that take the field in Cynthiana this year.
Senior Brandon Martin is an All-State pitcher with a career record of 16-3 and is one of nine pitchers returning in Whitaker’s stable this year.
6-foot-7 senior Clifton Snider will join Martin in the rotation along with Matt Dye, Jared Martin, and Logan Dailey.
The Harrison County infield returns mostly intact led by junior shortstop Eric Case (.210), sophomore third baseman Jared Martin (.375), and sophomore second baseman Matt Dye (.402).
When Brandon Martin isn’t pitching, he’s playing centerfield and hitting at a .419 clip.
Other players Whitaker will rely on this year include senior Beau Sanders (.275), sophomore Malcolm Thomas (.429), sophomore Shane Fowler (.390), and junior catcher Bobby Feeback.
The Thorobreds won their district and advanced to the region finals with a young squad last year. Now, they enter the 2008 season ranked No. 15 in the preseason with hopes of getting back to the state tournament for the first time in three years.
Scott (16-14) suffered one-run losses in both the district tournament and region tournament last year.
The Eagles return a pair of the region’s top pitchers for head coach Troy Roberts.
Senior Jordan Adkins won five games and led the staff with 49 strikeouts. Scott is hoping for a healthy season from senior Zac Adams, giving the Eagles a nice 1-2 punch on the mound and making them a tough out in the postseason.
They are hoping to get some more pitching depth from Taylor Smith.
Campbell County (18-13) finds themselves in a similar position as Scott with a healthy starter and another one trying to get that way.
Senior Jordan Woodruff won seven games and struck out 37 batters last year and will lead the Camel pitching staff this year.
Senior Andy Franzen will return to the mound after taking last year off from pitching due to shoulder surgery.
Matt Coffman and Ben Dreyer will be among the contenders to round out a spot in the rotation.
Senior outfielder Austin Studer returns after hitting .361 last year with 20 RBIs and 21 runs scored.
Woodruff will play third when he’s not pitching, and Franzen can play a number of different positions.
The Camels will benefit from hosting the district tournament and the semi-state round should they advance that far.
George Rogers Clark (33-6) used an experienced squad to win the 10th Region and take eventual state champion Paul Dunbar to three games at the semi-state round.
Evan Bennett leads the Cardinals both at the plate and on the mound.
He’ll get help from Ryan Barker as the Cardinals rebuild in 2008, but still with a chance to challenge Harrison County for the region title.
Both Bourbon County (17-11) and Bishop Brossart (24-13) are in rebuilding years, with Tyler Verst the top returning pitcher for the Mustangs.
Verst won seven of eight decisions for Brossart last year and should get help from senior Zach Hertzenberg.
Two other teams who could make some noise in the postseason are Montgomery County (7-22), led by junior Cody Curtis, and Mason County (14-18), led by Richie Cox who will attend Harvard to play football.
Deming (2-19) only won two of 21 games last year but lost just one senior to graduation.
Seniors Caleb Curtis, Josh Goddard, and Joey Johnson, and junior Darius Workman are part of the Deming rotation that returns intact.
Workman, who can play just about anywhere, and junior catcher Garrett Young are Deming’s leaders on offense.
