I graduated from Manual and unless things have changed, they can accept out of county students so long as they pay some predetermined tuition. I knew people who did this.

 

The number is small, one or two per class, and I don't know of a single instance where these have been athletes.

Like I said, call 485-3011 and ask them.

Trinity and St. X have a very wide recognition. Their Alumni bases are huge and active. Students come to these schools for a variety of reasons and from a variety of influences. MANY are 2nd, 3rd or even more, generations imbedded in their loyalty to either X or T. As an example, in this year's senior class, there were 268 graduating. 68 of those Seniors' fathers attended Trinity, thats 25%. Of those 25% I know of quite a few who have other children who have either attended, are attending, or will be attending Trinity. Many others have fathers who attended St. X, who've chosen to "buck the system".

Well, not counting man #369, the new percentage is 18.5%, or 19%, if you want to round up.

For example, Coach Hensley at Dunbar in Lexington is a great coach in my opinion. How fair would it be if he had the fortune to draw from some of the best talent from Woodford Co, Scott Co, Clark Co, Madison Co, Jessamine Co, and other Lexington schools? How GOOD would Dunbar be then? Would they need to complain about anything then? Would they worry about what the KHSAA did with the playoff system? Would they be a dominant force in 4A year in and year out?

Lexington 4A is perennially known to under-achieve, nothing at this time would lead me to be think differently...

I actually did do this, and I was told that they did...if there were spots available after Jefferson County resident students were enrolled.

This is my understanding of how it works in Kenton Co. If you live within the defined area for the school and are attending a district junior high school then you are accepted into the high school. They will accept students from outside of defined area for the school as long as there is enough room. They have some predetermined number of students allowed given the number of classrooms and teachers. The predetermined number is a number that they do not wish to exceed for academic reasons. If there isn't enough room then the student doesn't get in regardless of how good an athlete a student is. If there is enough room to let some kids in but not all, they have established a set of critieria that determines the order in which kids are accepted. Athletics are not a part of the criteria. Once you're allowed in, you can stay. This is true for kids who live within the Kenton Co school district but want to go to another school in the district (i.e. someone in Scott's area who wants to attend Dixie) as well as kids from outside of the district. There will be a starting offensive lineman for Highlands this year who lives in Kenton Co and originally wanted to go to Dixie but was turned down for lack of room. His family then decided to send him to Highlands since Dad graduated from Highlands.

Knute Rockne, any public school in KY can accept any student-athlete they want to accept.

 

Remember, you can't self impose restrictions on your own school district and then complain that others won't do the same. The practice is not only stupid but it is un-American.

I think with the state of education in America that private schools(religious or otherwise) will only become more plentiful and this "problem" more difficult.

I havent seen anyone go on to discuss why public schools (the majority??) impose this standard.

Is/was it a courtesy between districts, funding reasons, political boundaries, what?

It just seems that these rules are not in place because they want to limit their ability to get good students (that is the reason for schools people - not sports per se)

Anyway, seeing the "guru mantra" again piqued my interest in that

I think another commonly used phrase is revealing when discussing the enrollment boundaries issue:

"They're taking our kids".

That one always gets me and tells me exactly where the priorities lie for such districts.

Ive never used the recruiting word like other people.

Sure it happens some, but most of what I think people get in a twist about consists primarily of great programs naturally drawing the talented kids.

Whether it be football, track, basketball, swimming, music, science, math - many, many kids just gravitate towards what they perceive as the best team or environment (which they want to be a part of).

Just coaching youth leagues Ive been amazed at the pressure of kids & parents trying to be on what they perceive as "the" team. I think we've all seen it.

Depends upon the circumstances. Did the student play sports at another school? Did the student transfer while IN high school? Is he/she enrolling as a freshman?

I just erased everything I typed but no way I would want my child in any High School in Lexington other than Catholic or Chrisitan! Louisville is a little different as Manual and Male have some great academic programs. Why wouldn't you want your kids in a place like T or X though? They get the ultimate well rounded education. People can try to tear those two apart but the tradition speaks for itself and that is why they don't have to go out and recruit IMO. Do I think they have a HUGE advantage..... NO DOUBT! Is changing class systems, Public/Private, supposed blind draws etc going to change that....NO! It's just life until the Publics find a way to make their schools just as attractive. I don't think a place like John Hardin is too far from doing that and with the rapid growth in Oldham Co things could change there. Their schools are notorious for being the tops in education, $$ for facilities, community support for the most part etc. T+X will always have an advantage but other places raising the bar can close the gap some.
