Weight lifting during season

Featured Replies

Should it be done? Does your school's football or baseball coach make the kids lift during baseball season? If so, how often? I know they shouldn't lift on game days.....what about practice? I know most baseball coaches don't want them lifting during season. But I don't think it would hurt a couple of days a week. What do you all think?

You shouldn't do it during season. You should do it preseason. You are concentraiting on your swing and you don't need to have mussles being soar or anything.

I would have to disagree. I believe that players should lift at least 1-2 times a week. Nothing like a full workout, more of a lite workout is OK. They need to keep in shape during the season.

I agree with you somewhat there Pat. No more than 2 times a week just to keep a little tone and not lose the strength you had built up. During baseball season, there are enough rain-outs, off days to where a light work out can be done. BUT...nothing too heavy.

If lifting during season, should be less weight and more specific strengthening related...curls, Jobe exercises, flies, pull downs, 50%-60% bench press and not too build mass muscle, but to maintain flexibility.

If any player lifts during, they should stretch considerably before and after. Pitchers should concentratie more on cuff, scapula exercises with flexible band work, than lifting heavy weights. Jobe exercises, are very good 2 days before start.

Sounds like a great season workout regiment. Strike3, you should be a coach. :thumb:

...thanks and some would argue with you...

A player can also include lifting, with more sets and lighter weights:

Tricep curls and rolls

Lat pulldowns

Forearm work (tubing, medicine balls, fingertip curls)

Medicine Ball (twists, lunges, overhead throw, chest to chest)

Ab Work (crunches, suitcases, set-ups, dips, wall sits)

Step Ups

Supermans

Pus-ups

Rope Jumping

Lunges

You don't have to work on arms so much. Work on your legs and lower body strength!!!

I'd probably argue right back. :D

This looks good. I'll pass it on.

the university of kentucky baseball team lifts throughout the entire season sometimes right after games. i dont know exactly what they do but i know they lift three times a week. im not one to argue with a division 1 baseball program.

Lifting during the season is great. It not only strengthen and tones muscles, but it help's with the wear and tear that players encounter during all the practices and games.

I just dont see the point in lifting all fall and winter when your bench is 245 and then you get to regional tournament time and its back down to 200. What does that help, you should maintain your strength throughout the whole season or else all the conditioning is meaningless.

Your bench, is not an accurate measurement of arm and shoulder strength, but rather an exercise for the back and chest. Long muscles, with a full range of flexibility motion is much critical, than contracted/tight muscles, that have lost their elasticity.

Keep in mind, bench is just one of part of a conditioning program for Baseball players, they should be utilized in conjunction with many other aspects, including maintaining flexibility, core work, medicine ball, cardio, plyometrics, etc....I know UK incorporates all these items and than some, into their Strength and Conditioning program.

I keep in touch with Coach Hutsko, their S&G Coach for ideas and their workout plan, for both Pitchers and Position players.

During season, it's all about the little muscles. Maintain flexibility and work the small shoulder muscles and you'll be fine. Quite frankly, after Feb. 15th I prefer guys to only condition their muscles instead of trying to add bulk to them. That's what hte off-season's for. Stretch...stretch...stretch.

I strongly disagree. Whats the point of lifting in the off season then. You will just lose everything you worked so hard to get if you stop lifting. Anyone who has ever stayed on a consistant lifting reutine will tell you that after a while the soreness does not come as often or as bad. Maintnance lifting should be done, not max lifting, but lift to maintane your current strength.
