Mayfield at Graves County predictions

Mayfield got blown out in week one and barely beat Ballard Memorial last week. Do they have enough to beat Graves County this week?

Graves is playing very well, but, if Mayfield will play with the intensity they played with in the 2nd half last week, they'll win. They've still got more talent on the field than Graves does and I believe last weeks Ballard game was a wake up call...

It all depends on which Mayfield team shows up...if it is the 1st half team against Ballard then Graves will win....but if it is the 2nd half team against Ballard then Mayfield will win this one. Should be a good game as Graves County is playing better than I had anticipated them to this early with the new players but Coach Rogers and his staff have done a great job of getting his team ready to play.

I really hate it that we have to hope and pray that the team of a particular half shows up to play, it just isn't Mayfield football. I am hoping that the boys just expected a win at Ballard last week and were really preparing for Graves this week. I expect Mayfield to try to establish a ground game at some point in the game (preferably in the first half) and then exploit Graves pass defense which gave up I think somewhere around 300 yards passing to Massac county. Our kids just have to keep their heads in the game and make the catches, when you run an offense like Mayfield is running, you have to catch at least 50% of your passes if you expect to win the game.

I will go with the tradition. Mayfield 27-23.

Mayfield is simply overrated. Everyone goes off of their history and past, which is very strong. The fact remains is they're not the dominate 1A team they use to be. Graves has a good team this year. Graves 28-7

Have you seen Mayfield this year? If you follow the program as closely as some of us you'd know that we aren't overrated, I would say that 7 or 8th in the 1A polls is about right for us at this point. The talent is there, its just some of the same junk that we had last year, a bunch of kids that are kinda just going through the motions, they come on the field but don't come to give 100%. Its like wearing that cardinal on their jersey doesn't really mean much to a good portion of the ones you see on the field. I know it would be a disaster, but if I was the coach and saw what was going on, I would yank out the kids that don't want to play and put in ones that do, we'd suffer but we would be better off in the long run for it.

In the Ballard game, I would have went away from that game thinking that the talent wasn't there, but in the 4th quarter I saw a team score TD after TD like it wasn't nothing. We were catching everything, unlike the rest of the game. This team can do well if it wants to.

Having only seen the Fort Campbell game and listening to updates on the Ballard game on the radio, I can believe that Mayfield “got it together” in the second half against Ballard. They also played well against FC in the first quarter but then fell apart. My concern is can they play a complete game without falling apart? That is why I’m picking Graves. From what I’ve seen and heard Mayfield has the ability to be a top team, but can they play up to their potential? I hope they can and wish them all the best in 1A, but thus far I haven’t been impressed.

That statement really suprises me! Mayfield kids have always taken a lot of pride and played really hard in the past. Why do you think its taken that kind of turn?

Coaching...I like Joe as a person and he knows football, but, he doesn't relate to the players well at all and doesn't seem to demand the discipline like his dad did or moreso, Leahy did...I've said it before, I can't imagine players doing the show boating, taking plays off or playing without the pride a program like that merits under Jack or Paul...I will also say, his assistants aren't at the level of past Cardinal coaching staffs and that may have something to do with it as well...The technique just isn't at the level of past teams, both blocking and tackling and pursuing the ball, as a unit...In there defense, they have changed there offensive look 100% from what worked for years and years...They pass the ball alot more, run alot of shotgun and 4 and 5 wides and 1 back and empty back sets and these kids grew up playing the old style and it'll take them awhile to adjust to it...It's alot more open and fun to watch, but, I believe there's still a place for the 4 and 5 yd plays and a cloud of dust, so to speak and it seems at times, the kids are lost on what they're supposed to do or where they're supposed to be. Maybe, they're being too complex and should simplify things and let there athleticism win for them...There's also alot of kids roaming the halls that are very good athletes that for whatever reason, aren't playing...That would have never happened 10-20 years ago...I think all these factors come down to one thing, coaching. I'll probaly get bashed for this assessment, but, that's what I think the problem is...

That pretty much sums it up. I don't know what a coach can do these days to get respect, but I wish it would happen fast to this team or its going to be an ugly season.
