Regional and Semifinal Matchups ('06, '07' 08)

From the KHSAA website

3) For the regional championship (third round), the pairings shall be set on a rotating basis in the classes. These pairings shall represent the champions of the district as determined by the first two rounds of play. The rotating schedule for the region (and relevant semi-state, in bracket order) shall be: (see attached grid)

4) The highest seed (finishing position in the district) shall host the regional championship game (third round). Should teams with the same seeding meet in the third round, the team representing the even-numbered District shall host the games in even-numbered years, while the team representing the odd-numbered District shall host the game in odd-numbered years. If the paired districts are both even or both odd, the highest numbered district shall host the game in even numbered years and the lowest numbered district shall host the game in odd numbered years.

5) For the semi-state round (fourth round), the champion of region 1 will play the champion of Region 2 while the champion of Region 3 will play the champion of Region 4. The team representing the even-numbered Region shall host the games in even-numbered years, while the team representing the odd-numbered Region shall host the game in odd-numbered years.

I appears that we need to look at this round 3, round 4 shakeup as a rotating schedule, over the course of the next several years and not just a one year deal designed to punish certain teams.

I haven't looked very closely at this yet to see how it would affect any particular teams. But if I read this correctly, a team could be in one region one year and in another region the second year.

For instance, look at 3A, district 6. They are in region 3 in 2006, facing D5 in round 3. For 2007, they are in region 4, facing D7 in round 3. And in 2008, they are in region 3 again, facing D5 in round 3.

This doesn't look fair to me, from a home field advantage standpoint.

Case in point. In '07 and '08, Russell is in D7, Belfry in D8, but they swap regions each year because of the rotation.

Belfry is R3 in '07 and R4 in '08, while Russell is in R4 in '07 and R3 in '08.

If both those teams advance to the regional championship, Belfry would host it each time because they are in the even region in the even year and odd region in the odd year.

Plus Belfry would host this year (06) if both teams advance, so that potentially could be 3 years in a row Russell would have to travel to Belfry for the semifinal game.

And I'm sure that same scenario could play out in other regions throughout the state.

A lot of us still are thinking we will be in a specific region, based on the way it has been in the past, when in reality, we don't know that we will flip flop regions from here on out. This is from another thread.

Another thing, Mercer in 5A will be in the east semi-state. Their district will include Southwestern Pulaski, Pulaski County, South Laurel and Lincoln Co, all of whom who are very good football programs. The region will include the "mountain" 5A schools of Perry Co. Central, North Laurel, Clay County, etc....Highlands, CovCath and Ashland are the big names in the other region of Mercer's semi-state.

Truth is, Mercer will never be in the region with Perry, North Laurel, etc., at least not the next two years.

Mercer will be in District 7 in the new 5A alignment. BUT...

This will put them in Region 4 in 2007, along with District 6 (Ashland, Bryan Station, Johnson Central, Montgomery, Woodford)

And they will be in Region 3 in 2008, along with District 5 (Cov Cath, Dixie, Highlands, Holmes)

Maybe you could answer this. Hypothetical. Mercer and Russell win out. Who is the regional Champion? The winner of the state championship?? Or maybe I'm looking at this wrong.

If you are talking about this year, Mercer is not in Russells region.

I must not understand then. When you look at Renhards it shows Russell and Mercer in the same region.

Okay so wait..........

The KHSAA does not discuss playoff equations but does discuss playoff quartics. It says that, in our notation, x4 = a + bx2 can be solved by quadratic methods but x4 + ax2 = b and x4 + a = bx2 are impossible at the present state of science.

So who is at home again?:confused:
