Dear KHSAA, (Addendum)

After a productive BGP debate/discussion, I have modified the original proposal to what, appears to be, a majority of the posters were looking for, and have come up with these options.

Option 1: The two top teams from each district going to the playoffs. This will be decided using head-to-head competition from the regular season district games. This will give us 16 teams from each class going to the playoffs, instead of the 32 teams we currently have (roughly 50% of the teams in each class). This will eliminate the two intra-district games and District 1's District champion will play District 2's District Runner-up and District 2's District Champion will play District 1's District Runner-up and so on.

To implement this, we only have to do away with the first two playoff games and use head-to-head results to determine a District Champion and a District Runner-up.

Option 2: Have a Championship Tournament. Everyone makes the playoffs and play a single elimination tournament to crown a State-Champion in each class. Every team will get to play at least an additional game, maybe more, and have an opportunity to upset a district/regional rival. Some may say this will take to long, but really it will only add a few games to the current playoff format. Currently 32 teams, from each class make the playoffs, and Class 1A has a total of 41 teams, Class 2A has a total of 33 teams, Class 3A has a total of 39 teams, Class 4A has a total of 35 teams, Class 5A has a total of 37 teams, and Class 6A has a total of 36 teams. So, going from 32 to about 38 teams, on the average would not add that many games to each class's playoff format.

To implement this we only have to add the additional 1-9 teams to the playoff bracket and let them play until we have a State Champion.

Option 3: Leave the playoffs the way they currently are.

So, what do you think Option 1, Option 2, or Option 3, which would make Kentucky Football better?

Option 1's problem is that 3-7 team (who finishes top 2) gets into the playoffs while the 7-3 team (who is 3rd in the district) sits at home. Non-District games become meaningless.

I would have to vote for Option 2. The fact that our state is smaller and we can do this can be viewed as a good thing, in my opinion.

You know when I started this topic, I would have been totally against Option 2, but with the discussion, I am now leaning toward Option 2. That is why I have not cast my vote yet. The fine people who posted in the "Dear KHSAA," thread have made me think to much. I am still weighing Option 1 and Option 2 (Option 3 is out in my book).

The regular season being meaningless is why I started this debate, but it still may be, and that may be what the majority of people want - is a new season come playoffs.

I agree with this. We need to rethink and ask "why did we go to 6 classes to begin with?" The true answer is teams like Woodford, and Bryan Station didn't think it was fair to be in the same class as Trinity and St. X with the large difference of boys in the schools. Even though Bryan Station was the last Lexington team to be Trinity

They have eight teams in each sectional (district), they play a quarter final district game, then a semi-final district game, then a final district game. The winner moves on to a semi-final, then to the state championship game.

Eight team district, with eight districts in each class, and five classes. Not much different from Kentucky with 4-6 team districts, eight districts in each class, and 6 classes.

Indiana does the state tournament with 63 teams in each class, and Kentucky only has around 38 teams in each class, so it is very possible for Kentucky to have such a tournament.

No bye week ... and they now start the season a week before we do, since Kentucky moved back a week.

So, if we eliminate the buy week, that will add enough room for the one additional round needed for a state tournament. We only have 4-6 teams in each district, so that would just add one game to the tournament format. We already have two rounds of district playoffs, districts with 4 teams will not add a game, and the districts with 5 or 6 teams will only have to add one additional game.

We don't need every team in the playoffs, period.

Personally, I like the bye week because I think it gives schools some flexibility in scheduling.

I can see the bye week, I personally don't care for it, but I can see it. As for all the teams in the playoffs, were just playing what if anyway. I think it has some draw, but I like the old format also.

But, really if you look at it most of the teams are in the playoffs now. Like I said, only one 2A team is missing the playoffs this year, and only 9 1A teams are missing the playoffs out of 41 total teams. So, 32 teams out of 41 are going to the playoffs, that's 80% with 1A having the most teams.
